At the council meeting on Thursday, January 29, 2026, town officials began discussions on organizing a community-wide clean up effort. The goal is to work together with residents to improve the appearance and safety of Newington.
Topics discussed included maintenance of town right of ways, litter removal, unkept yards, overgrown lots, nonfunctioning vehicles, and abandoned structures. Officials emphasized that this initiative is meant to support residents, not criticize them, and to help everyone meet the minimum standards already in the town ordinance.
What Constitutes a Nuisance
The council also reviewed the types of conditions that fall under the town’s nuisance ordinance. These include situations that affect public health, safety, or general appearance of the community, such as:
Excessive trash or debris on property
Overgrown grass or vegetation
Unsafe or abandoned structures
Nonfunctioning or inoperable vehicles
Conditions that attract pests or create safety hazards
These are long-standing standards intended to protect property values, promote safety, and keep Newington looking its best.
Abatement and Voluntary Compliance
Town officials stressed that abatement is not about punishment. The process focuses on voluntary compliance, clear communication, and working with residents. When a nuisance is identified, the goal is to notify property owners, offer reasonable timeframes, and encourage cooperation to bring properties back into compliance.
As plans develop, more details will be shared. Community participation will be encouraged as Newington moves forward with this town clean up effort.
